Like wine, every social network has its own unique personality. Notes of distinction that set them apart from the rest. They each have their own vibe, with some more playful, some more experimental, and some more established.

It was perhaps over a glass of wine that we first made the connection between social media and wines (or perhaps not, we’re not copping to anything). Each is a crucial part of today’s culture; think of how they’re both often part of celebrations and major life events. Just like social media, wines have their own flavor; you wouldn’t want a California Zinfandel with a light tuna salad, nor would you post a risqué meme on LinkedIn.

With that in mind, we’d like to play social media sommelier for a moment, suggesting just the right pairings of social networks and fine wines. While we don’t recommend mixing the two directly (not professionally, certainly, and not even personally, as drinking and tweeting is more often than not a regrettable act), let’s explore the ways some of the more popular social channels are like some of our fave drinks. Bottoms up!

Pinot Noir = Facebook 

Let’s start with Facebook, arguably the most popular and most accessible platform, which we could compare to the most accessible red wine, Pinot Noir. They’re the old faithful, the ones with the potential to age well. A drinker of Pinot Noir doesn’t claim to be a connoisseur but knows in their heart that catching up on what old high school friends are doing while guzzling sipping a glass of this easy red is a classic pairing. Hey, did you know that girl from algebra had another baby? Look how cute!

Chardonnay = Yelp

Either offering can be tart, crisp, or rich and buttery. Either way, you’re getting a punch of flavor on the tongue, whether from the drink or from that salty review you just read. A Chardonnay enthusiast knows exactly what they like and is not afraid to show it (or tell you in a highly descriptive write-up). Chardonnay is never muted and is perfect for bold, booming personalities who love to share their recommendations with others.

Malbec = Twitter

Like Twitter, a good Malbec can lean spicy and deep but is sometimes too intense for casual consumption. Sipping a Malbec is a commitment that is poured with the intention of having your full focus, much like getting pulled into a deep dive on trending topics of the moment.

Rosé = Instagram

Hey, Rosé! Are you a white wine or a red wine? You’re neither, and you refuse to pick a lane, but that’s why we love you! We bet you can relate to the way it’s hard to pin down Instagram to one identity: Is it an e-commerce shopping platform? A media company? A social network? The fun is in just enjoying all the flavors (or features).

Prosecco = TikTok

Bubbly, delicate, and effervescent, Prosecco keeps it fun, fresh, and lighthearted, in the glass and at the party. In fact, we’d probably call TikTok the Prosecco of the social platform party. If there’s a trending dance moment, it’s time to pop the bubbly and learn that choreography! Go on with your bad self, TikTok!

Merlot = Linkedin

Smart, savvy, and best in small sittings, Merlot is a treat to be enjoyed when you want to feel enlightened and conversational, just like reading a new thinkpiece on LinkedIn. Merlot’s low tannins make it approachable and easy to get along with. And you’re just as likely to hear “So, what do you think?” from a Merlot drinker as from a LinkedIn user. They definitely have a theory, and they want to share it with you.
