Reports are that the Virtual World industry is booming in tough economic times.    Forbes calls it a virtual escape from economic pain, “Despite all the doom and gloom, one tiny sector is offering a glimmer of hope: virtual worlds.”  Article Link. Reports from the recent Virtual Goods Summit are that the virtual economies are thriving.  Article Link.

And in what might be the strangest indicator, Twofish just raised $4.5 million in venture funding to actually develop economic infrastructures for virtual worlds.  Article Link.
