Hobbyist: The Art of Paper Modeling

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAOne of my favorite activities is paper modeling. Take a digital 3D model, flatten it, print it out and reassemble it in stunning 3D!

Ok, it’s a little more complicated than that but as a builder it doesn’t have to be (more on that later). In recent years, the art of paper modeling has steadily gained in popularity worldwide, almost completely vanishing after WWII (You can read a brief history of the paper model here).

The recent rebirth of the paper model is due mostly to the cost of traditional ‘plastic’ model kits becoming increasingly expensive and the kits with better production quality out of reach for most casual modelers.

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAThe hobby of paper modeling has something for everyone and every skill level. The child that needs a great school project to the advanced model builder that builds for competitions, paper has it all! This is a great way to spend constructive quality time with children as it often lends itself to building on math, reading and history skills, not to mention coordination skills such a cutting, painting and coloring, folding and rolling. Most kits can be built using basic tools such as scissors, rulers, q-tips/paint brushes and common school glue (white glue).

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAThere really is something for everyone! With everything under the sun having a website these days, there is no shortage of paper model sites that offer everything from Sci-Fi models to historical offerings including aircraft, buildings, cars, boats…you name it. Most sites offer printable kits in pdf format. Pay, download, print and build. However, if you aren’t sure this is for you, model sites almost always offer a selection of FREE kits that you can simply download and build. No money wasted if you decide it’s not for you. Can’t beat that!

Here are some great sites that stock everything paper modeling has to offer. Please check it out and give it a try!

Now go and enjoy this great hobby!
