Every Doge Has Its Day

There’s a new kid on the cryptocurrency block. Well, it’s actually a dog. Specifically, it’s Doge (You know, that meme you’re probably sick of). Dogecoin, which was started as a joke, has only been around since December, but it’s already making a name for itself.

Dogecoin, like Bitcoin, is an Internet-based currency. The difference is that Dogecoin doesn’t require any custom hardware to mine. Mining, or “digging” Dogecoin, can be done with an off-the-shelf video card. This makes it much more accessible. If you have a PC, you have everything you need to put Dogecoin in your (virtual) wallet. This is one of the reasons it’s become popular so quickly.

In addition to the low barrier to entry, Dogecoin is gaining notoriety for its charitable causes. The community has already organized to send athletes to The Sochi Winter Olympics, including the Jamaican Bobsled Team. And over the last few days, about $30,000 worth of Dogecoin was donated to the 4 Paws for Ability charity, which provides service dogs for children.

Dogecoin can already be used to purchase a wide variety of things through a handful of online stores. And recently, it made the crossover into the real world. Dogecoin was used to buy donuts just this week.

Will Dogecoin make you a millionaire? Probably not. But if Bitcoin has shown us anything over the last 5 years, cryptocurrency is likely here to stay. Why not have a little fun with it? Guides can be found here.
