A Few of our Favorite Holiday Traditions

The holiday season is upon us!  And since this is officially a fact (with the passing of Thanksgiving, here in the States), I wanted to take a moment and share some of my family’s traditions. Some of them may seem silly to you, but to my children, it is an important part of celebrating the holidays. Over the years, my husband and I have tried to keep some of our own childhood traditions and incorporated some of our own.

The Wrapping!

CupboardsIn our first tradition, we cover all doors with wrapping paper- Bedroom, bathroom, and exterior and yes, even the kitchen cupboards. This takes some time, but it’s a really cheap and festive way to decorate the house.

The second tradition happens on Christmas Eve. Dinner isn’t fancy that night, it’s just some simple Hors d’oeuvre to be eaten from a big platter while we sit in our pajamas and watch A Christmas Story on TBS over and over and over again.

The Treats!

WillcerealOur third tradition: The Christmas morning cereal! I generally do not buy sugar loaded cereals for my children. Having said that, every Christmas they get their favorite sugared cereal wrapped up as a present and set under the tree. This tradition actually started when my husband was a teenager and his sister-in-law gave him a box of Capt. Crunch as a gag gift.

The Gift!

mommatreatUp until this point, Christmas has been all about the kids — as it should be! However, the forth tradition is just for me. As a mother of 4, Christmas morning is well… hectic to say the least. After all the presents are opened and the kids are off playing with their new (and loud) toys, my husband knows that the only thing I truly want is to drink some Mimosas and take a nap. My husband is the best and always makes sure I get exactly what I want for Christmas.

Now that you know some of my family’s silly little traditions, I’m curious as to everyone else’s. Does your family do anything a little unorthodox, and yet seems completely necessary or the whole holiday isn’t complete?

I hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday season!

Loved this, Kelly!! Our family always opened gives on Christmas Eve, and on Christmas day spent it with extended family (grandparents, cousins, etc). 🙂
